A Pussy Hat Portrait Campaign

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” – Dr. Seuss

Like so many others, Cameron and I have been eager to participate in the tidal wave of activism that has reverberated across the globe in response to the 2016 Presidential Election. We initially used our voices and our checkbook to take a stand against fear, oppression and hatred, and to advocate for women, refugees, minorities, the LGBTQ community, and countless others. Nevertheless, we have consistently felt compelled to somehow make a more substantial impact.

I recently participated in the Women's March in Washington, DC, where I rallied with hundreds of thousands of passionate individuals committed to the same causes. While Cameron really wanted to attend, he was at home with the kids, but eagerly followed the social media coverage. After the march, we were enveloped in a renewed sense of optimism, purpose, and faith in the resilience of the human spirit. Together, we looked through hundreds of Facebook messages and Instagram photos as they poured in from family and friends across the globe.

By Sunday morning, we were stunned to learn that nearly 3 million individuals had marched across the continental United States. This is nearly one percent of the US’s population. Most of their names are unknown to us, but their faces are seared into our hearts. They - you - are the Faces of the Resistance. Collectively, we are the new one percent, and it’s a label we couldn’t be prouder to carry.

“Do. Or do not. There is no try.” - Yoda

After waiting for what felt like too long, we finally had our vision. Over the next few months, Cameron and I will be organizing a fundraising portrait campaign. We’ll be taking portraits that tell the stories of the Faces of the Resistance. If you’re reading this, that probably means YOU!

We will sell the resulting images as stock photography through our preferred agency, the artist co-op Stocksy United. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to a new charity each quarter. We’ll start with the American Civil Liberties Union, and are considering dozens of others. If you have a suggestion, we’d love to hear from you.

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” – Margaret Mead.

We’d be thrilled if you would join us, and there are a few ways you can help:

Volunteer as a model.

As a young family, we are limited in how much we can donate financially. If you are in a similar position, you can make a financial contribution by volunteering as a model. Lifestyle and portrait images of “real people” are among the most financially profitable images in stock photography (and the reason we chose this medium). Your time and image can truly make a difference.

For the time being, we are seeking volunteer models in the Washington, DC metro area, New York City, Philadelphia, and central New Jersey. Our first shoot date will be February 12, 2017 in Philadelphia. A time and location will be announced soon. We’ll have a few open shoot dates announced shortly for DC, Central NJ, and New York City, and will be organizing additional shoot dates around model availability.

Send us a message (or better yet, grab a spouse, partner, friend or family and send a message together) if you’re interested!

Share this message on Facebook and like us on Instagram.

Getting these images in front of buyers eager to support the cause will make the difference between raising $1,000 and raising $10,000 (or more!). Please consider sharing this message and our images on social media platforms to increase awareness. We will launch a Facebook campaign and Instagram account after our first portrait session in February.
